Culver’s is switching food suppliers for its area restaurants, dealing a blow to Sysco Foods.

Sysco had supplied 60 percent of Culver’s restaurants nationwide. But Culver’s recently decided to partner exclusively with Michigan-based Gordon Food Service, a company that has supplied Culver’s restaurants for 10 years.

Culver’s spokesman Paul Pitas said Gordon “provides the best distribution agreement for the Culver’s system as a whole. Culver’s has been fortunate to have Sysco working with us for many years and this was a difficult decision. We are grateful for their support of our growth.”

Asked how this change would affect staffing levels at Sysco, particularly at its Baraboo distribution center, spokeswoman Wendy Olson said the company doesn’t comment on employment matters.

Gordon Food Service serves Culver’s restaurants through distribution centers in Michigan, Kentucky, Florida, Texas and Wisconsin. Spokeswoman Deb Abraham said the company hasn’t announced plans to build additional distribution centers in Wisconsin. However, Gordon added a shift at its Kenosha distribution center in anticipation of growth in this region.

Founded and based in Sauk City, Culver’s has 524 restaurants in 22 states.

Based in Texas, Sysco is one of the the largest food suppliers in the world. It employs more than 50,000 people at 194 locations in the U.S. and other countries. The company serves 425,000 customers. Since its initial public offering in 1970, when sales were $115 million, Sysco has grown to a projected $46 billion in sales this year.

This has to somehow be related to the great business environment in our divided state. Vote for Mary Burke and the democratic ballot. Culver's is a community-centered restaurant chain whose owner supports raising the minimum wage.
