The Columbus School District Education Endowment Board is hosting its second annual Cardinal Apple Awards program Saturday, March 23 at Columbus Fireman’s Park Pavilion in honor of Alice Schmidt’s dedication to education. The event will run from 5-8 p.m. Schmidt passed away in the fall of 2018.
Hors d’oeurvres will be served. Tickets are $20 and include two drink tickets.
Items from Schmidt’s estate to be auctioned off are Schmidt’s popcorn popper (mobile), antique rocking chair, vintage treadle sewing machine, cabbage shredder, antique drop leaf table, cedar chest, antique toys, antique child’s sled, children’s China tea sets, antique dolls, antique suitcases, old metal tub, to name a few. Almost everything can be considered very old or antique. Famous auctioneer from Columbus, Julius Temkin, will host the live and silent auction. Sponsorships of $50, $100, $250, $500, or any amount, are also being accepted to show appreciation for Alice and the enrichment of learning by funding innovative and creative programs and experiences in Columbus School District.
Alice Schmidt grew up in Columbus and attended Columbia County Normal School where she earned her teaching license. She taught in southeastern Wisconsin but spent most of her time in the city she loved. Schmidt was involved in the city’s cemetery board, restoration of the Hasey Popcorn Wagon, Columbus Community Hospital Foundation Board, Columbus Garden Club, Wisconsin’s Retired Educators Association, Historical Landmarks and Preservation Commission, Olivet Church, Mindfulness Matters, and the Columbus/Fall River Food Pantry. Schmidt was also the city’s historian. She serviced on the Columbus Board of Education where she was instrumental in the creation of a 4K kindergarten program. Schmidt was also a member of the Columbus School District Endowment committee. Schmidt spent her life advocating for children, literacy and for public education.
