Columbus could welcome a hotel to the city as soon as next spring.

Cobblestone Hotels, a chain headquartered in Neenah, is interested in constructing a mid-level hotel in the Commerce Center near Highway 151 and Highway 16/60. The city is working with local businessman Mike Eisenga, owner/CEO of First American Properties, to bring Cobblestone to Columbus. Eisenga owns the property and said a deal to sell the land to Cobblestone is in the works. Cobblestone is interested in Lot 10 in the Commerce Center.

In June, the city announced it would conduct a hotel feasibility study to determine if the city could attract a hotel. According to the city, the purpose of the market study was to estimate the perceived demand and to estimate financial performance of a new hotel in Columbus.

To conduct the study, the city hired GSG Hospitality Group, a national consulting firm focused on data and primary intelligence insights for local municipalities.

“I credit the city for doing that,” Eisenga said. “It was a good piece of forward thinking on their part and I was impressed they did that.”

Eisenga said the study’s results show Columbus is suitable for a mid-level, 3-4 star hotel. He said the Cobblestone hotel could include up to 54 rooms, and an indoor pool, along with small conference rooms.

“(Cobblestone) specializes in building hotels in smaller communities, some of them smaller than Columbus,” Eisenga said. “They definitely expressed their interest in Columbus and we met on several occasions.”

City Administrator Patrick Vander Sanden confirmed Cobblestone is interested in Columbus, but declined to provide further details.

While Cobblestone has hotels throughout the country, the majority are located in the Midwest. The chain has 22 hotels in Wisconsin, including small municipalities such as Wautoma, Ripon, Pulaski and Clintonville. Eisenga said the chain just completed a new hotel in Hartford. Cobblestone was founded in 2008.

“I’m happy to be working with them,” Eisenga said. “It would be a nice thing to have a new hotel in Columbus.”

If a deal is approved, Cobblestone could start building in the city by next spring.

Eisenga said he has several lots still available for purchase. For more information, businesses can contact First American Properties at 920-350-5754.
