1969

A serious fire occurred Sunday afternoon at the former Burr Oak Cheese Factory in the town of Elba, located six miles southeast of Columbus. The building had been converted into a garage and the loss was estimated at $7,000.

Medicare fees have been adjusted upwards with older persons paying an additional $4 for a new deductible total of $44 per hospital admission. Medicare officials note the hospital bill for an average hospital stay now reaches $600.

1979

The great storm of 1978-79 that arrived on Sunday, Dec. 31 left seven inches of snow along with strong drifting winds, closed most of the county roads and left only one lane of traffic on most roads on New Year’s Eve. By the time the storm ended the area had 14-15 inches of snow.

Second Ward Alderman Jim Hays will challenge three-term Mayor Elvin Reynolds for the office of mayor at the spring election. Erwin Boese, Willis Damm, and William Wendt are running for alderman.

1989

A construction project that began this fall on Highway 60 across from Frank Porth Chevrolet is well on its way to becoming a 24-unit apartment building for the elderly. The building is being constructed by Lutheran Social Services which is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the local Faith Lutheran Church.

The Wisconsin State Horse Council has elected Carol Yohn of Fall River as president of the organization. Yohn served as vice-president of the Horse Council in 1998 and as a representative to the Council from the Wisconsin Harness Association.

1999

The city skating rink, in Rotary Park across from Mullin’s Drive In, should be open this weekend. The ice is six inches thick and the snow has been plowed with a city pickup truck. There is a warming shack with concessions and music.

Larry Olson of Columbus officiates for the WIAA for high school games and is a charter member of the Yellow Thunder Officials Association. Olson has officiated at four high school state tournaments in baseball, softball, basketball, and volleyball.
