The Baraboo wrestling team saw a solid, fourth place finish at the annual SPASH Duals in Stevens Point on Saturday.
The Thunderbirds went 3-2 on the day, defeating Manitowoc Lincoln 46-33, Kewaunee 42-36, and Rinelander 43-27. Baraboo went on to fall 37-32 to the hosts in dramatic fashion.
“Overall it as a team I thought we wrestled well. The last dual against SPASH, it came down to the last match and we ended up losing in overtime,” Baraboo coach Joe Bavlnka said. “If we would have won that one we would have been in the championship.”
The T-Birds instead found themselves in the third place dual against DC Everest, where another back-and-forth dual took place but Baraboo fell 35-33 to take fourth.
Three wrestlers went undefeated on the day, including Carlos Chavez in the 145, Traton Winecke in the 195, and John Gunderson in the 152. Two others went 4-1, including Tyson Fry in the 220 and Joe Schick in the heavyweight.
The Thunderbirds, who have won five of their last seven duals, will host Mount Horeb on Friday for a Badger North Conference dual.
