A Lindina man faces criminal charges after police say recorded minor children while they were in the bathroom.
David Meichus, 46, is charged with three counts of capturing an intimate representation without consent. He faces up to three years and six months imprisonment for each charge.
According to the criminal complaint:
A Juneau County Deputy received a complaint Aug. 20 of an adult male using “spy cameras” in a bathroom.
Investigators met with an adult female Aug. 21 at the residence in Lindina for an interview regarding the cameras.
The female stated she became aware Meichus was using hidden cameras to “record the girls while they were naked in the bathroom.” She discovered pictures and videos on Meichus’ cell phone and discovered the recording device in the bathroom.
The woman showed detectives the location of the camera. It was placed behind the vanity mirror in the bathroom. The camera was positioned near a portion of the mirror that was worn and rendered transparent.
Law enforcement photographed the mirror in question.
The woman agreed to let detectives perform a data extraction on her cell phone for investigative purposes. She said she tried to get Meichus counseling, which he initially agreed to but later changed his mind, saying he “didn’t need it.”
The extraction yielded 28 files from the cell phone, 22 pictures and 6 videos depicting individuals in “different stages of undress in the bathroom.”
Detectives met with Meichus as he arrived at the residence. He agreed to come to the sheriff’s office for an interview. Meichus initially denied recording the individuals but eventually admitted to doing so.
Meichus later agreed to provide law enforcement with other cameras in his possession. At his residence, Meichus located one camera in the garage and gave it to the Detective but claimed to be struggling to locate the others.
As the Detective inspected a fireplace brick box, Meichus stated “there you go, you’re onto one now.” The Detective told Meichus to “be straightforward with him and provide him with all of the cameras he had in his possession.”
Meichus opened a metal cabinet and retrieved two more cameras for the Detective.
Meichus is not currently in the Juneau County Jail. His pretrial conference is scheduled for Nov. 7.
Editor's Note: an earlier version of this article stated Meichus recorded "minor children" in the bathroom because those words were used to describe the victims in the criminal complaint. Fact checking with the Juneau County Sheriff's Department revealed the victims were over the age of 18. They did not consent to being recorded in the bathroom. Meichus' age has also been corrected from 38 to 46.
