Necedah has boasted one of Wisconsin’s best powerlifting programs for quite some time now. They showed why once again at last weekend’s state meet.
The Cardinals took home the Division 3 female equipped and male equipped team state championships at the 2018 state meet, hosted by the Wisconsin High School Powerlifting Association (WHSPA) Saturday, March 10 and Sunday, March 11 at Mauston High School. Necedah also placed third as a team in the Division 3 female raw category.
In the female equipped category, the Cardinals accumulated 88 team points to easily outpace second-place finisher Independence’s 26 points. In the male equipped category, Necedah notched 16 team points to edge out Elk Mound’s 12 points for the state title.
Meanwhile, host Mauston nabbed a pair of third-place trophies in the Division 2 female raw and male equipped categories. The Golden Eagles sent 15 lifters to the state meet this year, a program record.
Individually, Necedah won a pair of state titles: Machaela Exner in the female 60 kg equipped division and Brian Bauch in the male 52 kg raw division.
Also for the Cardinals, Noelle Ladwig placed second in the 48 kg equipped division, Abigail Saunders placed second in the female 75 kg equipped division, Kayelyn Hadley placed third in the female 60 kg equipped division, Cloe Winters placed third in the female 75 kg equipped division, Natalie Weckesser took fourth in the female 52 kg equipped division, Samantha Kristian finished fourth in the female 82.5 kg equipped division, Riley Ganther came in sixth in the female 56 kg equipped division, Makenzie Exner was sixth in the 90 kg equipped division and Miah Slaton took sixth in the female 90+ kg equipped division.
Erin Smelcer finished seventh in the female 56 kg equipped division, Anna Renner came in seventh in the female 67.5 kg equipped division, Anastasia Texley was in the female 90+ kg equipped division, Hailey DeGuire took ninth in the female 67.5 kg equipped division, Jasmine Popp finished 10th in the female 67.5 kg equipped division, Alissa Saunders came in 10th in the female 75 kg equipped division, Cheyenne Polack was 12th in the female 67.5 kg equipped division.
Jamie Hernandez placed second in the female 60 kg raw division, Sophia Becerra placed second in the female 67.5 kg raw division, Elena Marquez placed third in the female 67.5 kg raw division, Brianne Wilson came in sixth in the female 82.5 kg raw division, Somer Nolte took seventh in the female 75 kg raw division and Alicia Suzda finished 19th in the female 82.5 kg raw division as well for the Cardinals.
On the male side for Necedah, Dawson Fornander placed second in the 52 kg equipped division and Logan Ladwig took third in the 60 kg equipped division.
New Lisbon’s Hannah Slater brought home a state title in the female 60 kg raw division.
Mauston, meanwhile, thrilled the home crowd with a trio of individual state championships: Jelly Barr in the female 48 kg raw division, Lexxie Barr in the female 82.5 kg raw division and Niko Iglesias in the male 125+ kg equipped division.
Elsewhere on the girls side for the Golden Eagles, Miranda Koehnke placed second in the 75 kg raw division, Sara Erickson took ninth in the 82.5 kg raw division, Michelle Steffens finished 16th in the 75 kg raw division, Tiffany Hatfield came in 20th in the 90+ kg raw division and Adrianna Domenech was 23rd in the 67.5 kg raw division.
On the boys side for Mauston, Xavier Ollarzabal placed second in the 60 kg equipped division, Will Breunig took fifth in the 60 kg equipped division, Alex Gutierrez finished fifth in the 60 kg raw division, Daniel Domenech came in seventh in the 82.5 kg raw division, Ping Vang was eighth in the 75 kg raw division, Travis Johnson took 12th in the 90 kg raw division and Ryan Williams finished 14th in the 90+ kg raw division.
The following Mauston lifters qualified for the national powerlifting meet: Jelly Barr, Adriana Domenech, Miranda Koehnke, Michelle Steffens, Lexxie Barr, Sara Erickson, Tiffany Hatfield, Will Breunig, Alex Gutierrez, Ping Vang, Daniel Domenech, Travis Johnson, Devin Bennett, Jared Litty and Niko Iglesias.
A total of 26 Necedah lifters will compete at nationals: Brian Bauch, Abigail Saunders, Machaela Exner, Brianne Wilson, Sam Kristian, Cheyenne Pollack, Cloe Winters, Anna Renner, Natalie Weckesser, Sophia Becerra, Robert Swenson, Alicia Suzda, Miah Slaton, Dawson Fornander, Noelle Ladwig, Somer Nolte, Logan Ladwig, Riley Ganther, Alissa Saunders, Hailey DeGuire, Makenzie Exner, Jasmine Popp, Roger Daniels, Kayelyn Hadley, Anastasia Texley and Elena Marquez.

The 2018 USA Powerlifting High School National Meet will be held Thursday, March 22 to Sunday, March 25 at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton.
