The Mauston Golden Eagles boy’s basketball team defeated the Sparta Spartans 51-35 Tuesday evening.
The Golden Eagles struggled in the first half, but led 22-14. In the second half, Mauston scored 29 points while Sparta scored 21.
After a tough loss in their second game of the season to Lake Mills last Saturday, Head Coach Gil Saylor said it “feels good to bounce back.”
“We worked hard on Monday for practice and then we came out here and we really played hard again,” Saylor said.
He said the team defended “hard and sound” and all five guys secured rebounds, so the Spartans couldn’t get another opportunity to score and transitioned back to defense quickly.
“We forced them to play half-court offense,” Saylor said. “Which I felt gave us our best chance and it did. We defended really well.”
Point leaders for the Mauston Golden Eagles include Tarren Hall with 17 points and Dakota Barnier with 13 points. For Sparta, Caleb Schauf ended the night with 12 points and Alex Burke scored 7 points.
Moving forward, Saylor said the team needs to work on refining their technique. He said he knows on defense the team can do better, but the Golden Eagles also have to work on their offense as well.
“This team (Sparta) came out and gave us two different defenses,” Saylor said. “We didn’t respond well at all to one of them.”
Hall said the team also needs to improve on their shooting.
“We need to get more used to each other,” he said. “Get running a little more and making shots.”
