Hope House partners with School District

Students at East Elementary School learn about healthy relationships and Internet safety with Jess Kaehny.

Jess Kaehny, the community education coordinator for Hope House of South Central Wisconsin, visited the Baraboo High School health class several days the first week of January to talk with the sophomores about healthy and unhealthy relationships, sexual assault, sexual harassment and dating violence.

Kaehny, who has worked with the school district for nearly seven years, had discussions with the students about traits of a healthy relationship, what they can do to help someone in an abusive relationship, what constitutes consent and what sexual harassment looks like and what to do if they see it happening, among many other topics.

Then throughout the second week of January, Kaehny also visited the third through fifth grades at East Elementary School. Third graders participated in a discussion about healthy relationships, and fourth and fifth graders participated in NetSmartz, a presentation on Internet safety.

Resources available at the Hope House include a 24-hour hotline, counseling, support groups, legal help, 24-hour on-call support during sexual assault nurse exams, shelter and community education. For more information about Hope House, call 356-9123.
