A New Lisbon woman will receive probation and fines after being convicted of child abuse on Tuesday at the Juneau County Justice Center in Mauston.
Heather B. Mead, 33, received two class A misdemeanors for neglecting a child after pleading no contest to both counts. Mead will receive two years probation and a fine of $465 for each offense.
On May 12, Mead was charged after two children made abuse claims. Mead was originally charged with one count of physical abuse of a child – intentionally cause bodily harm, which carries a maximum sentence of six years imprisonment and a $10,000 fine.
The Juneau County Department of Human Services were notified of the complaints last spring. The alleged victims, age 8 and 12, said they were frequently punched and kicked by Mead, and struck on the head by an ice scraper. According to a criminal complaint, Mead slammed their heads into a wall and tied the two children together.

In an interview with Stepping Stones in La Crosse, the alleged victims said they were often not allowed to use the bathroom. According to one complaint, Mead didn’t allow one of the children to leave the room and, if either child urinated or defecated at night, they were sometimes not allowed to shower afterward. Mead also allegedly forced the children to eat canned food until they vomited and sent them to bed hungry.
