A Madison man faces a seventh offense drunk driving charge after prosecutors say he drove to a gas station with a blood-alcohol level that was more than double the legal limit.

Samuel Frank Martin, 44, was held on $750 cash bond during an initial appearance in Sauk County court Monday and ordered to maintain absolute sobriety if released.

According to a criminal complaint, at 8:30 a.m. May 4 a Sauk County Sheriff’s Office deputy observed a vehicle with large cracks in the windshield traveling on Reedsburg Road in the town of Delton.

The complaint says the deputy stopped the vehicle and noticed a strong odor of intoxicants. The deputy also noted Martin’s eyes were “bloodshot and glassy in appearance.”

Martin told the deputy he was going to a gas station to “pick up a few things” on his way back to a hotel at the Ho-Chunk Casino outside Baraboo, the complaint says.

Asked how much alcohol he had consumed, Martin told the deputy he had one and a half cans of beer, the complaint says. A preliminary breath test indicated he had a blood alcohol level of 0.19 − more than twice the legal limit.

The complaint says Martin was previously convicted six times of operating while intoxicated in Indiana.

Martin is due for a return hearing June 12.

When is Wisconsin going to put these repeaters in jail for a long time? More than 3 OWIs should mean automatic jail time. It's shameful that they can just pay a fine and be let loose to harm other citizens on the road.
