We are sharing Wisconsin State Journal staffers' favorite work from 2019. Editorial cartoonist Phil Hands picks those on his short list.
My favorite cartoons aren't necessarily the funniest cartoons, although drawing President Donald Trump's zany White House was really funny. Sometimes the best cartoons tackle serious and sober topics like my drawing of the many faces of homelessness in Wisconsin. Other cartoons highlight the fun quirks of our community, such as when Paul McCartney came to Madison. My cartoon about how to pay for roads made the list because it quickly explained complex state policy, while including a depiction of an Illinois tourist wearing socks with sandals. But the best cartoons read between lines and offer new insights to the readers in a creative way, like my cartoon about Robert Mueller explaining his report.
So please enjoy some of my favorite work from the last year.
