Donald A. Olson, 86, of Portage, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018, surrounded by his family, at St. Clare Meadows Care Center in Baraboo.
Don was born Jan. 10, 1932, in Green Bay. He was adopted by Alfred and Lorraine (Erickson) Olson in Iola. On June 10, 1950, he married the love of his life, Elsie Lewison. They were married for 55 years when Elsie passed away on June 30, 2005. Don started in insurance with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in Milwaukee where he was assistant service manager. In 1963 they moved to Portage as an agent for Hardware Mutual Insurance Company (Sentry Insurance). In 1970 he opened the Don Olson Insurance Agency which became Don-Rick Insurance, retiring in 1987.
He is survived by his daughter, Sandy (Kevin) Van Demark; his sons, Greg (Julie) Olson and Kevin (Michelle) Olson; his grandchildren, Jason (Noel) Van Demark, Kimberly (James) Wolff, Jeremy (Jill) Olson, Justin Olson, Nathan Olson, Katie (Ryan) Young and Erica (Cody) Peetz; his great-grandchildren, Bailee Kath Paige and Claire Olson, Ella and Lyla Van Demark, Onalee and Lanagan Wolff, Natalie and Lucas Olson and Adaline Peetz; his sister, Sharon Miller; his brothers, Robert, Alden and Mark (Michelle) Olson; his brothers-in-law, Mel Richter, Rick (Diane) Lewison and Tim (Margie) Lewison, many nieces and nephews; a very special friend and companion for many years, Annie Hall; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Elsie Olson, his sister, Dorothy (Smith) Richter, and his brothers-in-law, Gaylord Lewison and Alfred (Butch) Lewison.
Memorial services will be private. Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage (www.pmmfh.com) is assisting the family.
