From the State Journal readers debate the F-35 fighter jet coming to Madison series

People in our East Side neighborhoods are concerned about the possible use of Truax Field as headquarters for the F-35 fighter jets.

While environmental and health issues are of great concern, the main issue seems to be the significant increase in noise that may occur when they take off and fly over different areas, even causing such high decibels as to make some homes uninhabitable.

Those of us in the area have no idea what these planes really sound like. Are people worrying over nothing?

The city of Madison, Dane County, the military, and whoever else is negotiating this possible move should invite or even insist that at least two F-35s be flown to Madison. The jets would demonstrate takeoffs, landings, the use of afterburners and flyovers with advance notice to the community.

We certainly have gotten a lot of input from personnel from Truax, the National Guard, meetings, brochures and booklets, and now notes and letters from our neighborhood Facebook pages. Now it's time for us to see and hear live what's coming.
