As reported by WisPolitics.com, during a motion hearing, a Waukesha County judge ruled absentee drop boxes aren't allowed under state law and issued an order directing the Elections Commission to let clerks know within two weeks. Judge Michael Bohren's ruling means drop boxes largely won't be allowed for the Feb. 15 spring primary. Ruling from the bench, he found state law only allows municipalities to offer an alternative site to collect absentee ballots that's manned by staff from the clerk's office. Bohren also ruled the Elections Commission should've gone through the administrative rules process when it issued guidance to local clerks on the use of drop boxes in the run-up to the November 2020 election as mail-in voting hit record numbers.
