The American Legion celebrates its 100 birthday today.March 15 It is the largest wartime veterans service organization with more than 2 million members. Wisconsin is home to more than 50,000 members and 500 posts.
An open house will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday March 16 at the Department Headquarters, 2930 American Legion Drive, Portage. Visitors may tour the Wisconsin American Legion Museum and Learning Center. Kids can meet Josh Dog and make cards for veterans and active military staff. A veterans services officer along with active members will be onsite to answer questions. Refreshments will be provided.
Wisconsin posts are celebrating and hosting special events throughout the year, including the Celebration of Freedom from Sept. 4-8 at the Columbia County Fairgrounds. This statewide public event features the American Vietnam Traveling Tribute Wall and vocal performer Chris Kroeze.
Programs and services offered by The American Legion stem from the four pillars upon which it is built: veterans affairs and rehabilitation; national security and foreign relations; Americanism; and children and youth.
