The Portage baseball team extended its winning streak to three games Tuesday night, earning a 9-6 comeback win over Sauk Prairie in a Badger North Conference game at Sauk City Jaycee Park.
Junior Colton Brandsma went 3-for-3 with a double and helped seal the win for the Warriors in the seventh inning. Leading 7-6 and in need of some insurance runs, Brandsma laced a two-out, two-run single to plate juniors Andy Mittlesteadt and Dalton Johnson, extending the Warriors’ advantage to 9-6.
With a three-run cushion, Portage junior Matthew Miles, who added a pair of hits, retired the Eagles in order in the home half of the final frame to end things.
It was a rough start for Portage as Sauk Prairie staked its way to a 6-3 lead through the first three innings behind a four-run first. The Warriors battled back however, cutting the lead to 6-5 with a pair of runs in the fifth on a two-run double by senior Cody Jahn.
Portage (11-8, 5-9 Badger North) then took the lead in the sixth behind two more runs on an RBI single by senior Kaden Lehman, who went 2-for-5, and an RBI double by Miles.
Junior Ryan Schultz picked up the win, striking out one and allowing just one hit in 2.1 scoreless innings of relief. The Warriors will look to keep rolling today when they take on Badger North foe Mt. Horeb in a non-conference game at Miller Park at 2 p.m.
