LODI — When the Lodi and Stoughton wrestling teams clashed last year, the Vikings rode an early lead past the Blue Devils.

It was a case of déjà vu Tuesday night as the host Blue Devils, No. 7 in the WiWrestling.com Division 2 rankings, dug another hole and were unable to get out, falling to the Vikings 50-20 in a non-conference dual meet. Stoughton, ranked No. 3 in Div. 1, showed its dual meet prowess in the 30-point win over Lodi.

“They just have a really good program from top to bottom,” Lodi coach Cody Endres said. “In wrestling, there’s no secret formula. If you put the time in, work hard and have good people involved in your program, you can have a pretty good team and they obviously have it going on there now.”

Stoughton jumped out to an early 11-0 lead through the first two weight classes. Senior Tyler Dow, a Wisconsin recruit, opened the match with a 19-4 technical fall win over Lodi senior Max Barreau at 170 pounds before junior Luke Geister-Jones pinned Lodi junior Nathan Beechey in 1 minute, 52 seconds at 182.

Jacob Heyroth got the Blue Devils on the board at 195 as the senior scored a 10-3 decision win over Stoughton freshman Brooks Empey. Heyroth, ranked No. 5 in Division 2 at 182, jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period. After adding a reversal to open the second, Heyroth notched a pair of takedowns in the final minute to take an 8-2 cushion into the third and held on from there.

“Anytime Jacob wrestles, it’s exciting,” Endres said. “He put points on the board, gets the crowd into it and we always feel confident with him. He’s doing a much better job his senior year scoring points and not keeping matches close.”

Heyroth’s win cut the Blue Devils’ deficit to 11-3, but it was the closest Lodi came all night. The Vikings proceeded to win the next four weight classes, including a pair of pins and another by technical fall, to take a comfortable 34-3 lead.

“In duals, bonus points are everything,” Endres said. “Their guys scored points, got our guys on our backs and put us away at times.”

Jacob Harland broke up Lodi drought as the senior breezed to a dominant technical fall victory at 120. Harland scored an early takedown before adding eight more back points in the first period to lead 10-0. From there, he added seven more points in the second, nearly coming away with a pin, to finish off the 17-0 win.

After another Vikings pin at 126, Brandon Errthum scored the Blue Devils’ first pin of the night over Stoughton’s Freeman Detweiler at 132. The senior took a 2-1 lead into the second period and continued his advantage into the third, leading 4-2. In the third, Errthum got in on Freeman, eventually working to a cradle and pinning Detweiler in 4:23 to make it 40-14.

“Errthum wrestles best when he turns a wrestling match into a fight and just goes hard,” Endres said. “He throws the techniques out the window, wrestles as hard as he can, gives maximum effort and that’s where he’s best.”

Lodi ophomore Jack Hansen pinned Stoughton’s Luke Spilde at 152. Spilde dominated the first two periods, leading 10-1 to enter the third, but Hansen scored a throw and caught Spilde in a headlock, eventually pinning the sophomore in 4:54.

“Everyone will remember the throw and the pin and how awesome that was, but as a coaching staff we look at him fighting off his back at two different times to get to that point,” Endres said. “There were probably times earlier in the year where he wouldn’t have given himself that opportunity, but he fought off his back and when you do that, good things happen.”
