Work will begin Monday on the railroad crossing at Wauona Trail.

The bumpy, deteriorated Canadian Pacific Railroad crossing on Wauona Trail in Portage will undergo long-awaited repairs starting Monday, Portage city officials announced.

While the work is going on, tentatively between Monday and Saturday, the crossing will be closed to traffic.

During an Aug. 1 hearing before the state Office of the Commissioner of Railroad, CP officials vowed that the crossing — the subject of numerous complaints from motorists and city officials — would be fixed before the end of October.

The crossing is very rough, and has caused damage to the underside of vehicles, even some that travel at or below the posted speed limit of 25 mph.
