Robert E. “Bob” Kleist, 70, of Portage, passed away at his residence Thursday, Sept. 28, 2017.
Bob was born April 29, 1947, in Portage, the son of Clifford and Anita (Kluge) Kleist. He married the love of his life, Kathleen Corbett, on Dec. 16, 1967. Bob, being a very patriotic individual who loved his country, proudly served in the U.S. Army from June 1967 through January 1969, serving one tour of duty in Vietnam. He and Kathleen had nearly 49 years together and shared their happy life with Lori, Alexis, Steven and Shayne. Bob was a wonderful, loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather who so loved sharing good times with special extended family and many special friends. He enjoyed talking to everyone, always had a smile and a story to tell. He loved cars and was always known for having a clean one. Bob worked at the Weyenberg Shoe Factory. Then he worked at the John Muir School as a custodian for 30 years, before retiring in 2004. He loved his job at the school and made many friends — both adults and children.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen (Corbett) Kleist; daughter, Lori Pike (Steven Lloyd); brother, Lyle Kluge; grandchildren, Alexis “Punkin” Lloyd, Shayne Lloyd; sisters-in-law, Jeanne Hansen, Carol (Tony) Swailes; and many other nieces, nephews, other relatives and close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Anita Kleist; brother, Lawrence Kluge; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Ray and Millie Corbett; and brother-in-law, Francis Corbett.
Funeral services will be private.
