A Portage snowplow clears the street Jan. 28 in front of Portage High School.

The city of Portage has declared a snow emergency ahead of another incoming blizzard.

The emergency declaration made Monday morning goes into effect at 6 a.m. Tuesday and will remain in effect until 7 a.m. Wednesday. Vehicles not in compliance with parking restrictions may be ticketed or towed.

The National Weather Service forecasts indicate 6-9 inches of snow could fall on Portage.

Parking along assigned plow routes and on all residential streets will be prohibited beginning at 6 a.m. Tuesday.

In the central business district, parking will be prohibited from 3 a.m. Tuesday until 7 a.m. Wednesday.

"We wanted to give the public as much notification as possible to get their cars off of the street," said Portage Public Works Director Aaron Jahncke. "Given the amount of snow and the amount of snow and ice on the ground already, we will keep the snow emergency on through Wednesday, for sure."
