Portage library's book sale biggest ever (copy)

Good deals for good causes might be found in three separate sales this week in Portage.

It starts today with the Friends of the Portage Public Library book sale that pays for the library programming for children, teens and adults, Friends Treasurer Judy Morrow said. The book sale opens to members only tonight from 5:30-8 p.m. and is then open to the public during normal library hours Thursday through Saturday.

Last year’s book sale raised more than $5,000 for the library and will once again have more than 15,000 items available for purchase this year, Morrow said.

It’s the biggest annual fundraiser for the Friends, which since October has donated $9,600 to the library.

“It gets bigger every year,” Morrow said of a sale that started more than 25 years ago.

On Thursday, the Columbia County Humane Society opens its three-day yard sale in support of the Bibi Fund, which pays for some of the more costly medical needs of the shelter’s animals, shelter Manager Jennifer Schkirkie said. Recent beneficiaries of the Bibi Fund include a cat that needed $1,500 in dental care and a pitbull mix suffering from pneumonia and skin issues resulting in medical bills north of $2,000.

Most of the items for sale were donated by community members, Schkirkie said, and the Humane Society is encouraging residents to continue donating items for the sale today through Thursday morning.

The sale, the shelter’s first in two years, will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

“At past sales, we’ve sold dishes, clothing, pets items, lounge chairs, collectibles,” Schkirkie said. “We’ll have a little bit of everything,”

The yard sale supplements gift baskets that volunteers have sold via the shelter’s Facebook page since December, their efforts also benefiting the Bibi Fund.

Volunteers have so far raised about $2,000 from the gift basket sales, Schkirkie estimated.

Also on Thursday, The Museum at the Portage opens its two-day sale that benefits exhibits, renovations and more. Organizer Kathy Rowley said it’s the first yard sale for the museum in at least 10 years.

It will be held from 1-4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.

“Many of the items are things people have donated to the museum through the years, the items not directly related to Portage history,” Executive Director Melody Brooks-Taylor said.

Items include furniture such as old farm chairs, decorative items including old picture frames and sets of National Geographic dating back to 1924.

“Everything we have will be vintage, in some way,” Brooks-Taylor said.

The museum — which opened for the spring season on the first weekend of April — is looking to reconfigure its interior space for the speakers and public events it regularly holds, acquire more storage space, install new exhibits and accomplish general repairs including to interior lighting for the stairway, Brooks-Taylor said.

“The interior lighting alone might cost us $5,000, which would be around 20 percent of our total budget,” Brooks-Taylor said. “The house is more than 100 years old, and we really just want to keep it functioning.

“We’re a nonprofit with a small budget and very thankful to everyone who helps us.”
