Try 3 months for $3

An event slated for 6 p.m. Thursday to honor local veterans was canceled due to unseasonably inclement weather.

Gold Star mother and author Karen Vaughn instead spoke to a group of Portage High School students around 2 p.m. Thursday in lieu of the previously scheduled event, Portage Police Chief Ken Manthey said.

“We are sorry to report that we are canceling the event,” said Fairway Mortgage Manager Gregg Steinhaus, who helped organize Vaughn’s visit. “The weather is just too questionable.”

In an email sent to Manthey on Thursday, Steinhaus said he and Vaughn plan to reschedule the event for a later date.

Jon Dyreson, a local veteran who also helped organize the event, said it will likely be rescheduled for sometime in the next three to six weeks.

He suggested sometime during the second week of May is most likely for Vaughn to be available to return to Wisconsin.

“We just didn’t want the safety of people traveling to be compromised,” Dyreson said.
