BARABOO — The Portage High School boys basketball team closed strong on Monday night.

The Warriors ended an eight-game losing streak by finishing the game with a 10-2 run to pull away for a 58-44 Badger North Conference win at Baraboo.

Portage (5-13, 3-8 Badger North) led 27-19 at halftime, but Baraboo (1-17, 0-11) was able to hang around for much of the second half. The Warriors led 42-31 before Baraboo made a small run to get back within striking distance.

Max Koenig assisted Caden Blum for a layup, while Noah Jackson stole a pass and made a fast-break layup to pull the T-Birds within 46-39. A Caden Carpenter steal and Blum offensive rebound led to two Blum free throws that brought Baraboo within 46-41.

But the T-Birds couldn’t get any closer, as Portage’s Dale Sheppard answered with a baseline drive and layup to end the Baraboo run.

Portage’s Connor Levander made a pair of free throws down the stretch to give the Warriors a 50-42 lead with 2:17 remaining.

Eli Considine put the game away from there, making a layup then immediately stealing the ball and making two free throws to give Portage a 54-42 advantage.

Portage held on from there to win its first game since a 71-62 home win over Wisconsin Dells on Dec. 28. The Warriors swept the season series with Baraboo, also recording a 67-49 home win on Dec. 7.

Considine, a senior, finished with half of Portage’s points, making 11 field goals and going 6-of-8 from the free-throw line on the way to scoring 29 points.

Levander and Matthew Miles added 11 and 10 points for the Warriors.

Blum finished with 17 points to pace Baraboo, while Calvin Peterson added eight points.

Portage is scheduled to host DeForest Tuesday before going on the road Thursday to play Waunakee.
