Playing in the wind and the rain, the Portage boys golf team was able to shoot well enough to finish in eighth place overall out a 18 teams at the Monona Grove Invitational at The Oaks Golf Course on Wednesday in Cottage Grove.
Portage finished with a 359, edging out Sauk Prairie by one shot, and finishing 34 shots behind meet champion Sun Prairie.
Leading the Warriors once again was the senior duo of Marcus Herwig and Dayne Hensler, with each golfer shooting a 14-over-par 85.
“Marcus and Dayne both played well,” Portage coach Ed Carlson said. “They are certainly capable of lower scores, but for the most part they stayed away from big mistakes and just kept plugging along. I was impressed how they kept positive even though they weren’t really ever able to get any momentum going. They have really played solid in all parts of their game early in the season.”
Portage senior Connor Levander also shot a sub-90 round, coming in with an 18-over 89.
“Connor did a nice job today,” Carlson said. “He was able to string some pars together and build some confidence. It was his best round of the year so far.”
