Led by senior Marcus Herwig, the Portage prep boys golf team shot a 363 and finished in sixth place out of 10 teams at the Sauk Prairie Invitational at the Lake Wisconsin Country Club on Monday.
Herwig finished in a tie for 10th place out of 50 players with a 16-over-par 86. Herwig played especially well on the front nine at Lake Wisconsin, where he four shots over par with a 40. Only one person had a better score on the front nine.
“Marcus actually played a lot better than that score would indicate. He got a couple of pretty bad breaks on the back nine which really hurt him,” Portage coach Ed Carlson said. “He did a lot of good things today.”
Portage senior Connor Levander shot a 17-over 87 to finish in 13th place as an individual. After opening his round with an eight on the par-5 fourth hole, Levander was able to play well the rest of the way.
“It was his best round of the season, and I can tell he is starting to get more comfortable and confident,” Carlson said. “I think he will really be able to build off this performance.”
Warriors senior Dayne Hensler shot an 18-over 88 and finished in 15th place as an individual. Rounding out the Portage scores were senior Matt Straka with a 102 and senior Ready Dresen with a 103.
The Warriors will return to action on Wednesday, when they play in the Badger North Conference mini meet hosted by Beaver Dam at Old Hickory Golf Club, beginning at noon.
