On a day that saw it lose to Waunakee by 22 strokes, the Portage prep girls golf team ended up feeling pretty good about how things turned out, as it raised money for the Divine Savior Cancer Fund as part of its annual Golfing in Pink event at the Portage Country Club on Thursday afternoon.

Portage also played pretty well in the 171-193 loss, led by sophomore Sophie Denure’s 5-over-par 40.

"Sophie finished the regular season as one of the top players in the Badger Conference,” Portage head coach Ed Carlson said. “Her preparation, mental game and decision making skills are just as impressive as her ball striking and short game. Tonight she was extremely sharp in all phases of the game."

Portage senior Anna Davidson shot a 10-over 45 which included a birdie her final hole.

“Her timing has been off of late, but I just get the sense that she is starting to get back into the groove,” Carlson said of Davidson.

One highlight for Portage was the play of Katelyn Williams, who shot her career-best nine-hole score with a 20-over 55.

"Katelyn just keeps coming on,” Carlson said. “Every part of her game is improved, and she is in much more control of her golf swing. She also has a great attitude which is so important."

Other varsity scores for Portage included a 53 from Rachel Hepler and a 56 from Maddie Mumm.

And while Thursday’s match was Portage’s final conference dual meet before next Tuesday’s Badger Conference Tournament, the day had a more important meaning for those involved.

"Every year this is an experience that is so moving, and I really appreciate how the girls have gotten into it and worked hard for donations,” Carlson said. “It is funny how one moment we are complaining about how horrible the mosquitoes are, and the next moment we are listening to a cancer survivor tell their story. It really puts life in perspective for you. Waunakee was a great guest and supported our efforts. Tonight is what high school sports are all about, and I know the girls will have a great memory well into the future."

The Portage golf team will continue its fundraising efforts at Portage’s home football game on Friday night, where it will be collecting donations at the main gate.
