The Portage High School girls tennis team picked up its first Badger North Conference victory of the season, beating Baraboo 4-3 on Thursday evening in Portage.
Of the seven matches played, five of them went three sets, including three of the four matches won by Portage.
Portage’s only win in two sets was by Olga Proto at No. 3 singles. Proto, a foreign exchange student from Italy, cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Anya Carlson-Edwards.
At No. 4 singles, it was Portage freshman Riley Wood that fought her way to a three-set win. Wood actually dropped the first set to Baraboo’s Kelsey Gasser before cruising to a 6-2, 6-1 win in the final two sets. Portage coach Sarah Pulliam said Wood made the proper adjustments after losing the first set.
“When I went and coached her, she said ‘I figured out the serve. I figured out what I need to do. I just got to place the ball,’ so it was just a matter of getting through that first set,” Pulliam said.
At No. 1 doubles, Portage’s Morgan Bisch and Ellie Vorpahl split the first two sets with Baraboo’s Shani King and Lexi Johnson before taking the third set in a tie-breaker. The match actually took so long it had to be moved to a lighted court so it could finish.
The win for Bisch and Vorpahl came in a rematch from earlier in the season. The first meeting was won by King and Johnson, but the Portage duo talked to their coach during Thursday’s lunch hour about what they needed to do to turn the tables in their favor.
“They were during lunch talking about what they had to do,” Pulliam said. “That’s awesome to already hear them practicing it.”
Portage’s other win came from the No. 2 doubles team of Anna Tamboli and Makenna Bisch. The pair won the first set 6-3, but struggled in the second set and lost it by the same 6-3 score. After a quick pep talk from Pulliam, Tamboli and Bisch won the third set 6-3 to clinch the win for Portage.
“It was a great night. It was a much-needed victory and this will give us good momentum for Reedsburg (on Friday),” Pulliam said. “It’s kind of our senior night, so we’re hoping to post another win.”
