Behind three champions at the WIAA Division 3 Laconia Regional on Saturday in Rosendale, the Poynette wrestling team was able to advance five individuals to next Saturday’s Dodgeland Sectional.

Winning individual regional championships for Poynette on Saturday were freshman Cash Stewart and seniors Levi Walz and Blake Shallow, while junior Gwen Golueke and senior Justin Taylor also advanced by finishing in second place for the Pumas.

Stewart’s title came at 113 pounds. After receiving a pair of byes into the finals, Stewart claimed his title with a 2-0 victory over Markesan’s Carter Newton. Stewart (34-1) will face Kewaunee’s Max Severin (18-16) in the opening round at sectionals.

Walz’s title came at 126 pounds, and like Stewart, he also reached the finals with a pair of byes. In the finals, Walz pinned Laconia’s Colton Lovejoy in 4:53. Walz (19-10) will face Lake Country Lutheran junior Connor Cass (21-12) in the quarterfinals at sectionals.

Shallow also reached the finals with a pair of byes before clinching his regional title with an 11-3 major decision victory over Princeton’s Logan Grienier. Shallow (31-5) will open at sectionals with a quarterfinal match against Mishicot freshman Brant Cracraft (25-12).

Golueke finished second at 120 pounds. After getting pinned by Laconia’s Michael Lonnee in the finals, Golueke punched her sectional ticket by pinning Markesan’s Edgar Hernandez in 1:27 in the second-place match. Golueke (18-8) will face Cedar Grove-Belgium senior Cael Erickson (38-2) in the quarterfinals at sectionals.

Taylor reached the finals at 182 pounds with a 10-0 major decision over Princeton’s Zach Moore, but lost 7-0 to Laconia’s Tyler Lovejoy in the finals. Taylor didn’t have to wrestle for second place, since he already beat Moore in the semifinals. Taylor (27-8) will face Reedsville senior Carson Schanilec (20-3) in the quarterfinals at sectionals.

Montello senior Drew Torres continued his impressive season, as he won the regional championship at 160 pounds. Torres pinned Princeton’s William Apland in the semifinals in 0:31 before pinning Laconia’s Brodey Schroeder in 1:22 in the finals. Torres (26-3) will face a tough opening-round draw at sectionals, as he will face Cedar Grove-Belguim senior Josh TeStroete (36-4) in the quarterfinals. Random Lake’s Grayson Vandenbush (38-2) is in the other side of Torres’ sectional bracket at 160 pounds.

Westfield advanced one individual out of the Laconia Regional, as sophomore Mason Peters finished second at 195 pounds. He reached the finals by pinning Princeton’s Owen Apland in 3:33 in the semifinals, but had his title hopes end when he was pinned by Markesan’s Daniel Saylor in 1:09 in the finals. Peters (12-11) will face Cedar Grove-Belguim’s Aaron Duenk (27-11) in quarterfinals at sectionals.
