Claire Koenecke certainly went out fighting on Oct. 21.

The senior, who has led the Reedsburg girls cross country team with consistently fast times throughout this season, did it again at a WIAA Div. 1 Sectional meet in DeForest. With a stacked field of over 80 competitors, Koenecke went on a tear, taking 11th place with a time of 20:21. Unfortunately, her time was just two seconds shy of qualifying for the state meet as she was beat down the stretch by two Middleton runners. With the top five runners that are not members of the two qualifying teams advancing, Koenecke was the sixth finisher.

“Athlete of the meet goes to Claire Koenecke, who ran a personal best time for the season,” Reedsburg girls coach Nicole Bruer said. “Claire placed 11th overall, the highest we have had in ten years. I think she surprised herself, more than anyone. Claire has been an integral part of the girls team for the past four years; her talent, leadership and kind heart will be greatly missed.”

Waunakee’s Reagan Hoopes was the top finisher, posting a time of 19:02 to record the first finish for the top five individuals not belonging to a qualifying team. The other four were Madison Memorial’s Sydney Peterson (20:02), Verona’s Julia Pletta (20:08), and Middleton’s Megan Schwartz (20:19) and Margaret Patterson (20:19).

Other Reedsburg girls finishers included Caylee Fry in 33rd (21:20), Annabelle Moon in 38th (21:37), Jenna McBride in 62nd (22:35), Kayla Greenwood in 75th (23:26), Alexis Knickelbein in 76th (23:27), and Anna Penkwitz in 80th (23:49). Overall, the Beavers finished in 10th place with a total of 219 points. Madison West took the title (58), followed by Stoughton (61), Middleton (78), Verona (117), Madison Memorial (137), DeForest (183), Oregon (186), Waunakee (206), Madison East (210), Reedsburg (219), Baraboo (319), and Sauk Prairie (334).

On the boys side, the Beavers stayed in a tight group back of the crowd, taking 12th overall with 347 points. Middleton took the crown (34), followed by Madison West (50), Verona (116), Madison East (131), Madison Memorial (149), Baraboo (151), DeForest (169), Sauk Prairie (185), Stoughton (217), Waunakee (225), and Oregon (286).

Junior Max Harsch had Reedsburg’s best finish, taking 56th (18:25), followed by Abednego Becker in 60th (18:31), Brendon Stelling in 73rd (18:54), Zach Hale in 78th (19:37), Noah Brunner in 80th (20:22), Alexander Gall in 82nd (20:45), and Luke Rapisarda in 83rd (21:01).

Boys Soccer

The Reedsburg boys soccer team saw its season come to an abrupt close on Oct. 19 when the No. 9 Beavers traveled to No. 8 Waunakee and fell 7-1 in a WIAA Div. 2 Regional.

Reedsburg became its own worst enemy in a tough second half, as the Beavers were given four cards by the official and were forced to play with only eight players for the final 15 minutes.

Reedsburg’s lone goal of the contest came during at the 16:06 mark on an own goal off a Waunakee defender. The mistake gave the Beavers a 1-0 lead, but the Warriors took over from there, as six different players scored seven unanswered goals. Waunakee scored twice within a five minute span during the 20th and 25th minutes before scoring again during the 37th to take a 3-1 lead into halftime. The Warriors went on to score four more in the second half. Reedsburg goalie Kip Cunningham recorded 21 saves in the contest, while Reedsburg’s offense only mustered up three shots on goal.

“We dealt with their early pressure far better than we did in conference. We looked better in the counterattack. Waunakee was able to score two goals by combining through the middle and beating defenders with give-and-go passes. They also scored via a cross that was headed in,” Reedsburg coach David Fitzpatrick said. “It was a disappointing end to a good season.”

The Beavers end their season 9-9-3 overall. Waunakee went on to fall 7-1 to No. 1 Elkhorn on Oct .21. Elkhorn will host No. 4 Sauk Prairie for a WIAA Div. 2 Sectional Semifinal on Oct. 26.
