A Rock Springs man was charged with his 8th drunken driving offense April 1 after police said he was driving while intoxicated in Reedsburg.

According to a press release from the Reedsburg Police Department, police stopped Richard McCabe, 72, the evening of March 31 near the intersection of East Main Street and Veterans Drive in Reedsburg. Police preformed a field of sobriety and physical dexterity tests. A preliminary breath test showed McCabe had a 0.154 blood alcohol level. McCabe was arrested for OWI. Police checked his records through the Department of Transportation and confirmed he had seven prior OWI convictions.

If convicted, McCabe faces a maximum penalty of a $25,000 fine, imprisonment of up to 12 year and 6 months and permanent revocation of driving privileges. McCabe was released on a $5,000 signature bond April 2 and is not to operate any motor vehicle with any detectable amount of alcohol in his system.

McCabe is scheduled to appear in court April 26.
