The Sauk Prairie High School boys basketball team couldn’t go on a run on Friday.
The host Eagles struggled to get enough offensive production to mount a comeback in a 53-43 Badger North Conference loss to DeForest.
The Eagles (0-3, 0-1 Badger North) trailed for much of the night. However, they kept it close early, as Sauk Prairie’s Brandt Wilson grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back to tie the score at 13 midway through the fist half. Tyler Uselman added a jumper to give Sauk Prairie a 15-13 lead with 5 minutes, 22 seconds remaining.
It was Sauk Prairie’s last lead of the night, as DeForest (1-2, 0-1) came right back down and hit a 3-pointer. The basket kicked off an 11-2 run as the Norskies opened up a 24-17 advantage.
Sauk Prairie trimmed the deficit to five points before DeForest’s Trey Schroeder hit a 3-pointer as the Norskies closed the first half on a 14-4 run to take a 27-19 lead into the locker room.
Jack Henderson scored on Sauk Prairie’s opening possession of the second half, trimming the deficit to 27-21 before DeForest called a timeout with 15:50 remaining. The Norskies regrouped and scored five straight points to reestablish control.
DeForest held a double-digit lead most of the second half. Spencer Breunig gave the Eagles a brief jolt, hitting a 3-pointer and a layup before missing a free throw that Henderson rebounded and put back to pull Sauk Prairie within 44-33. Henderson added a 3-pointer with under 4 minutes remaining, then Parker Breunig made a layup to cut the deficit to 46-38.
But the deficit was too much to overcome, as DeForest held on down the stretch to drop Sauk Prairie to 0-3 on the season, including 0-2 at home. The Eagles also suffered a 51-41 loss in Lodi on Nov. 24 and a 57-56 overtime loss to Watertown on Nov. 27.
Schroeder was the lone Norskie to score in double figures, finishing with a game-high 25 points while Jaiden Magli added nine points.
The Eagles also had one player in double digits — Spencer Breunig. The senior big man made three of Sauk Prairie’s four 3-pointers on the way to scoring 13 points. Henderson chipped in nine points, while Wilson finished with eight points.
The Eagles will look to get in the win column when they play a Badger North Conference game at Waunakee on Friday. The Warriors swept Sauk Prairie last season on the way to winning the conference title, notching a 68-51 road win and a 69-54 home win.
Sauk Prairie is in the midst of a five-game conference stretch that will also include a home game against Mount Horeb and road games in Portage and Beaver Dam.
