The Sauk Prairie High School boys tennis season opened with Saturday’s 4-3 loss at La Crosse Logan.

The Eagles took three of the four singles matches while being swept in doubles play.

Sauk Prairie junior Noah Wankerl went three sets to claim a 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 win over La Crosse Logan’s Ben Fowler at No. 1 singles. Tarren Nimmow added a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles, while Chris Leatherberry picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles.

Alex Kinnamon and Sam Humbracht took their No. 1 doubles match to three sets before dropping a 6-3, 3-6, 10-3 match to Garrett Simmons and Avery Schams.

Madison Edgewood 5, Sauk Prairie 2

Sauk Prairie faced a stiff early-season test Tuesday.

The Eagles opened their home schedule by hosting defending WIAA Division 2 champion Madison Edgewood in the Badger Conference Challenge.

Sauk Prairie was on the losing end Tuesday, dropping a 5-2 home match to fall to 0-2 in duals this season. Sauk Prairie and Edgewood matched up in the Badger Challenge after claiming the Badger North and Badger South titles, respectively, last season.

Both of Sauk Prairie’s wins came in singles play. Wankerl, a two-time state qualifier, came from behind to notch a 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4), 6-4 win over Alex Sviatoslavsky, who reached state as a freshman last season.

Leatherberry also dropped the first set before rallying for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 win over Jackson Powless at No. 4 singles.

Edgewood had the edge at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, with Christopher Boll claiming a 6-0, 6-4 win over Mack at No. 2 singles and Donovan Pfaff recording a 6-0, 6-0 win over Nimmow at No. 3 singles.

The Eagles went down in straight sets in all three doubles matches. Kinnamon and Hubmracht dropped a 6-2, 6-1 match to Chase Korb and Gavin Maloney at No. 1 doubles, Isaac Green and Max Sailor dropped a 6-4, 6-2 match to Alex Moen and Martius Bautista at No. 2 doubles, and Dom Babina and Carson Brinkmeier dropped a 6-1, 6-1 match to Austin Buchner and Sam Katerov at No. 3 doubles.
