Eddie Smith helped Loras College reach a new level over the weekend.
The 2016 Sauk Prairie High School graduate earned NCAA Division III All-America honors to help lead Loras to a second-place team finish — the best in program history — at the national championships in Roanoke, Virginia.
Smith took fourth place in the 165-pound weight class, while the Duhawks scored 66 points to finish as the runner-up to Augsburg (130).
Smith, a junior, started day two of the meet with a technical fall over Ithaca’s Austin Whitney and a 6-3 decision over UW-Whitewater’s Nick Bonomo to qualify for the third-place match.
Smith dropped a 6-3 decision to UW-Oshkosh’s Mark Choinski to take fourth. Augusta’s Lucas Jeske won the 165-pound weight class with a 5-2 decision over the Rochester Institute of Technology’s Dempsey King.
Smith, a four-time state qualifier and three-time placewinner while at Sauk Prairie, was one of five Loras All-Americans this season. Clint Lembeck added a third-place finish at 141 pounds, while Brandon Murray took fourth at 157 pounds, Jacob Krakow took eighth at 174 pounds and Guy Patron Jr. took sixth at 197 pounds.
Smith and his younger brother, Loras freshman Zeke Smith, were also named 2018-19 Scholar All-Americans.
