Try 3 months for $3

More Than 8 million tons of plastics are dumped in our oceans every year. Despite this, people still use plastic because it’s cheap and easy to get. Plastic should be banned because there is a garbage patch twice the size of Texas floating in the ocean, we waste too much plastic and it takes a long time to decompose, and most plastics end up in the oceans and animals are dying because of it.

One reason that plastics should be banned is that there is a garbage patch twice the size of Texas floating in the Pacific Ocean. According to scientist who performed an aerial survey, “The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is getting greater and is carrying about 79,000 metric tons of plastic.” (Khan 2018) This means that one day the oceans could be all plastic. Laurent Lebreton an oceanographer says, “The GPGP is just one of the many large garbage patches in the ocean. Humans manufacturing and quickly discarding plastic products has caused the patches to grow.” (Lebreton 2018) This means that when the garbage patches grow, animals will be in danger. If plastics were banned, the patches would stop growing and we could control them.

Another reason is that we waste too much plastic and it takes a long time to decompose. According to Rick LeBlanc, a physical geographer, “Plastic bags we use in our everyday life takes 10-1000 years to decompose, while plastic bottles can take 450 years or more.” (LeBlanc 2018) This means that plastic stays for a long time and it will take a long time to get rid of it. According to the Natural History Museum, “There are 12.7 million tons of plastic on the Earth.” This means that we could be living with plastic forever. If we got rid of plastic we could live longer.

The final reason plastic should be banned is that most plastics end up in the ocean and animals are dying because of it. Laurent Lebreton says that, “Recent studies show that biofouled plastic can attract fish and seabirds and end up in the food chain.” (Lebreton 2018) This means that most water animals could die. “Researchers have tried to get a handle on it, but microplastics are under the water to so they still end up in the guts of sea turtles or they strangle birds. This means that those animals could go extinct. Plastics should be banned so we can save the animals.

I understand why plastic can be a good thing, like for carrying groceries or holding a six pack. But it’s not so great when plastic gets in the ocean and kills animals. We should save those animals and ban plastic. Those animals need us to ban plastic or else they die.

Plastics are killing our planet. Because of this we should not have any more plastic. There is a huge garbage patch, we waste too much and animals are dying because of plastic in our oceans. The first step we should take is getting rid of straws in restaurants. We use more than 300 million tons of plastic worldwide every year. I wonder how much longer we will live if we keep using plastic?
