The Sauk Prairie Twins started last week with a near no-hitter.

The Twins gave up just one infield single in the fifth inning, as Sam Koenig and Jacob Pape combined to throw seven scoreless innings in a 3-0 home win over Cazenovia in Night League play on June 6.

“Our pitching and defense were strong,” Sauk Prairie manager Lucas Koenig said. “Sam and Jacob both cruised all night by attacking the strike zone.”

Sam Koenig got the start and had three strikeouts in two no-hit innings before giving way to Pape. The 2018 Sauk Prairie High School graduate threw five shutout innings to earn the win, striking out four while only surrendering one walk to go with David Klang’s infield single down the third-base line.

Offensively, Sauk Prairie scored runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings. Elijah Jorgenson went 1 for 2 in the leadoff spot — singling, stealing two bases and scoring two runs for a Sauk Prairie team that finished with five hits. Jeremy Meier went 1 for 1 with an RBI double, Connor Leister went 1 for 3 with a steal and a run scored, and Tyler Prime and Nolan Joyce each went 1 for 2.

Sauk Prairie 7, Muscoda 2

The Twins improved to 7-0 this season, including 5-0 in Sunday League play, with Sunday’s 7-2 win over Muscoda at Chuck Hall Memorial Field in Sauk City.

Sauk Prairie started slow, as Muscoda got on the board first by taking advantage of a Twins’ error in the second inning.

The Sauk Prairie bats took until the bottom of the fifth to get going against Elijah Alt. Alex Mayer hit a one-out triple, then Sam Koenig walked and Lucas Koenig brought them in with a home run to left field that gave the Twins a 3-1 lead.

“We got off to a slow start today,” Lucas Koenig said. “Defensively we struggled, but once we got the momentum in the fifth, we couldn’t be stopped.”

The Twins led the rest of the way, giving up a run in the eighth before tacking on four insurance runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by Meier’s bases-loaded single.

Sam Koenig earned the win on the mound, striking out seven while giving up three hits and one run in 5 2/3 innings. Taylor Koenig closed it out with 3 1/3 scoreless innings.

Both teams finished with eight hits, while Sauk Prairie overcame four errors and Muscoda played an error-free game.

Mayer went 3 for 4 with a triple, while Dylan Slotty went 1 for 4 with a double and a run scored, and Lucas Koenig finished 1 for 3 with a home run, three RBI and two runs.

Sauk Prairie has a three-game week ahead, hosting Mazomanie in Thursday’s Night League game before playing a pair of Sunday League games — hosting Ashton Friday and visiting Reedsburg Sunday.
