There are four WIAA Division 2 girls swimming sectionals in the state of Wisconsin.

One of those boasts the most top-end speed. That’s where the Sauk Prairie girls swim team spent Saturday, as the Eagles were among 16 teams to converge on Baraboo for the sectional meet at Jack Young Middle School.

Sauk Prairie navigated the talented field, qualifying for state in five events — advancing in all three relays while Grace Williams and Giulia Brickl will also compete as individuals.

Those finishes helped the Eagles score 180 points and take fifth overall. The two top-ranked Division 2 teams in the state were both in Baraboo, as Madison Edgewood (369) won the sectional title while McFarland (311) finished second. Baraboo (248) and Monroe/New Glarus (190) placed third and fourth, respectively.

The talent in Baraboo is evident when looking at the heat sheets for state. There will be 11 events during Friday’s Division 2 state championships at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium. The top seed in eight of those events will be coming out of the Baraboo sectional.

Sauk Prairie’s state experience will all take place in the early heats. The Eagles are seeded ninth in the 200-yard freestyle relay and will be swimming out of lane four during the first heat at state. The quartet of Cora Dunnum, Mariah Chao, Kassandra Miller and Williams got the Eagles through, touching the wall in 1 minute, 41.86 seconds to take fourth in the sectional — Sauk Prairie’s highest finish on Saturday. Madison Edgewood won the title in 1:38.70 and will be seeded first at state.

Sauk Prairie’s team of Alexa Judd, Brickl, Williams and Dunnum used a time of 1:52.70 to tie Monroe/New Glarus for fourth in the 200 medley relay. Sauk Prairie is seeded ninth in a state field that will be led by Edgewood (1:48.05).

Dunnum, Miller, Judd and Chao also got it done with a fifth-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay. Sauk Prairie’s time of 3:43.42 is the 10th-fastest state-qualifying time. Seven 400 freestyle relay teams advanced out of the Baraboo sectional, including Edgewood, which put together the fastest qualifying time at 3:34.58.

While the three relays did their job, Williams became the first Sauk Prairie individual to qualify for state thanks to her showing in the 50 freestyle. The senior touched the wall in 24.90 seconds to take seventh and qualify in an individual event for the first time in her career. Williams is seeded 10th at state, while McFarland’s Alexandra Moderski is seeded first after winning the Baraboo sectional title in 23.53 seconds.

Brickl, a junior, crept into state with a ninth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.90). Nine individuals advanced out of the Baraboo sectional, led by Baraboo’s Taylor Bradley (1:06.31) and Ella Lohr (1:07.31). Brickl is seeded 14th in a state field that is led by Whitewater sophomore Ella Houwers (1:05.88).

While it will be the first individual appearance at state for Williams and Brickl, they have both swam at state in the past. Williams swam in one relay as a sophomore in 2016, then was part of three Sauk Prairie relays at the 2017 state meet. Williams and Brickl swam the middle legs of the 200 medley relay last year, teaming up with Sydney Rall and Kaitlyn Miller to finish seventh in 1:52.81.

Williams, Judd, Kaitlyn Miller and Mariah Chao took fifth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:41.25) last year, while Williams, Judd, Rall and Chao placed 13th in the 400 freestyle relay (3:44.36). Sauk Prairie finished 11th in the state last season, scoring 346 points while Edgewood took home the Division 2 title with 346 points.

Sauk Prairie’s other top-10 finishes at sectionals included Miller in the 200 freestyle (7th, 2:03.02) and the 500 freestyle (7th, 5:31.19); Williams in the 100 butterfly (9th, 1:01.41); and Lauryn Drager in the 500 freestyle (10th, 5:43.03).
