The Sauk Prairie wrestling team’s reign came to an end on Saturday.

The Eagles came up short of earning a share of their ninth straight Badger North Conference championship, finishing just behind Waunakee at the Badger Conference Tournament in Fort Atkinson.

The Eagles scored 213 team points to take third out of 15 teams from the Badger North and Badger South conferences. Stoughton won the overall event with 383 points, while Waunakee took second with 281.5.

Sauk Prairie needed to finish ahead of Waunakee on Saturday to earn a share of the Badger North title, as the Warriors also beat the Eagles during the dual season.

Sauk Prairie had two individual champions on the day — Bryant Schaaf and Connor Warren.

Schaaf claimed the 160-pound title with a 3-2 win over Stoughton’s Cade Spilde in an ultimate tiebreaker. Schaaf, a senior who took sixth in the state at 152 pounds last season, opened his final conference meet with a bye before pinning Baraboo’s Frankie Van Houten and notching a 6-3 decision over Monroe’s Patrick Rielly.

Warren pinned all three of his opponents on the way to winning the 285-pound championship. After receiving a bye, Warren got his day started with a 2-minute, 26-second pin of Beaver Dam/Wayland’s Ramiro Vazquez and a 4:32 pin of Baraboo’s Joe Schick. Warren capped off his tournament with a 1:05 pin of Watertown’s Alex Nachtigall in the first-place match.

Marcus Hankins put together Sauk Prairie’s lone second-place finish of the day. Hankins earned a 5-2 decision over Fort Atkinson’s Thomas Witkins to reach the 195-pound finals, where he was pinned in 1:59 by Stoughton’s Brooks Empey.

Sauk Prairie’s Dawson Enge and Jesse Huerth each wrestled to third-place finishes.

After losing in the 113-pound semifinals, Enge bounced back with a 55-second pin of Monona Grove/McFarland’s Cole Weaver to earn a spot in the third-place match. Enge wrapped up his day with a 4:37 pin of Fort Atkinson’s Sawyer Brandenburg.

Huerth followed a similar path at 138 pounds, recording a pair of wins before dropping a 14-2 major decision to Stoughton’s Hunter Lewis in the semifinals. Huerth responded by pinning Waunakee’s Kyle Wilcox in 34 seconds and then receiving a disqualification in the third-place match.

Luis Elizondo and Reece Bierstaker added sixth-place finishes at 126 and 220 pounds, respectively, while Hayden Caygill placed seventh at 120 pounds, Adam Nolden took seventh at 132 pounds, and Austin Rider took seventh at 182 pounds.

Sauk Prairie will compete in Saturday’s WIAA Division 1 regional in Waunakee, where trips to Tuesday’s Tomah team sectional will be on the line. Individual qualifiers will advance to the Feb. 16 sectional in Verona.
