Similar to Ted Thompson, the man he succeeded, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst finds himself embroiled in a nasty public feud with his quarterback.
About to embark on his fourth draft as Packers GM, Brian Gutekunst’s acumen as an talent evaluator is hard to gauge.
Ted Thompson died on Wednesday night, three days after his 68th birthday and just as a Packers team that bears his fingerprints is again one victory away from a Super Bowl berth.

Imagine what it must have been like for Ted Thompson, in his first year as the Packers general manager, getting ready to make his first-ever pick in the NFL draft, to watch Rodgers tumble down the draft and remain on the board at No. 24. With Brett Favre still on his roster, Thompson’s first pick would define him — and set the Packers with back-to-back Pro Football Hall of Fame-caliber quarterbacks. As excruciating as Rodgers’ 4 1/2-hour green room wait must have been at the Jacob Javits Center in New York, his remarkable career is proof positive that good things really do come to those who wait. Set to enter his 16th NFL season and 13th as the Packers' starting quarterback, Rodgers endured the rocky transition from Favre during the infamous Summer of 2008, delivered a Super Bowl XLV championship in 2010 and won a pair of NFL MVPs (2011, 2014) along the way. He’s also insisted that he intends to play into his 40s, which means at least another four years with this 37th birthday looming in December.
This may look like a period piece from the early 1990s, but director Whit Stillman's witty, wordy comedy about foreigners abroad stands the test of time — not least because the appeal of the movie's main star, gorgeous Barcelona, is utterly timeless.
It appears that Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst has the courage to make that decision and draft a quarterback if the right guy is there.
The humble Thompson, who battled health issues brought on by an autonomic disorder late in his tenure as general manager, likely will never get the plaudits he deserves for the talented rosters he assembled during his 13 years in charge of the football operation. He can’t take credit for resurrecting the woebegone franchise, as his mentor Ron Wolf did, but he certainly righted the operation after head coach Mike Sherman struggled with the dual role of coach/GM in the early 2000s.
Thompson was enshrined in the Packers Hall of Fame Saturday night at Lambeau Field.
MAYVILLE — If you build it, they will come.
Whether he ended up picking the right guys, only time will tell.
