The treasurer for the Reedsburg Youth Hockey Association was arrested Tuesday afternoon after admitting to embezzling $144,000 from the association over the past 10 years.
According to a news release from the Reedsburg Police Department, police were alerted by board members of the RYHA in early May that they believed their treasurer had embezzled a significant amount of money.
The RYHA is in charge of fundraising and administration for youth hockey programs in Reedsburg.
“I think some board members looked at bank statements and realized something was wrong and came to us,” Police Chief Tim Becker said.
Detectives interviewed the treasurer, Daniel H. Lehman, 54, of Reedsburg, at his home on Tuesday and he admitted to the thefts, Becker said.
“He admitted to taking the money and was very cooperative through the whole process,” Becker said.
Lehman, the sole financial officer for the association, told police he had been taking the funds for approximately 10 years, Becker said. Lehman told officers he was attempting to offset personal financial hardships with the association’s money and intended on paying the money back.
Deb Rosholt, the president of the hockey association, could not be reached for comment Tuesday afternoon.
Lehman is being held in Sauk County jail for felony theft, pending a bail hearing.
