LA CROSSE – Just because Matt Schneider and Riley Budde had been to the WIAA State Track and Field Meet in La Crosse before didn’t absolve them from staring down fear Saturday.
LA CROSSE – Madeline Tompach cut it close twice Saturday afternoon in La Crosse.
In the finals of the Division 2 200 meter dash, her time of 26.25 seconds edged out Appleton Xavier’s Kelsey Worachek by a tenth of a second for the final podium spot. She later clipped Lakeside Lutheran anchor Meghan Pingel by three-hundredths of a second for fourth place to cap the 1,600 relay in 4:01.91.
LA CROSSE – Karina Elford narrowed her focus on the second-to-last hurdle Saturday at Memorial Stadium in La Crosse.
Once she did, her problems multiplied. Markesan’s junior standout was fixated on Edgar senior Holly Denfeld only to get ambushed by Haley Hazlett of Wild Rose and Shell Lake’s Hannah Cassel.
LA CROSSE - Several area athletes earned medals at Saturday's WIAA state track and field championships, headlined by a fourth-place finish from Beaver Dam's Matt Schneider.
Schneider was down to his final attempt at 14 feet, 6 inches when his pole broke on takeoff. Given a second chance, he cleared the height and went on to place fourth. Green Bay Preble's Jake Wallenfang set a new Division 1 state record in the pole vault by clearing 16 feet, besting Brookfield East's Glen Harold.
LA CROSSE — Windy conditions had an impact on times during the first day of the WIAA Division 1 State Track and Field Meet.
LA CROSSE – Beaver Dam track and field coach Dave Sager explained the ‘thrower’s code’ Friday night at Memorial Stadium.
“Why run when you can walk?” Sager said.
But Riley Budde was on a power walk with a head of steam. His recent form with his throws finally reached a breaking point with two scratches in the Division 1 shot put.
LA CROSSE – Sophomore Brooke Tonn has become Waupun’s Wally Pipp.
Tonn took fourth in the Division 2 long jump (17 feet, 4.75 inches) one week after breaking the school record while winning sectionals. She has less than a half-dozen meets as a long jumper under her belt.
LA CROSSE – Trevor Zonnefeld wanted to stand on the award podium at the WIAA State Track and Field Meet since he was a freshman.
Zonnefeld made trips back to Memorial Stadium the next two years. His trips stopped short of the podium until Friday.
He cleared 43 feet to take fifth in the Division 3 triple jump. It washed away last year’s disappointment and the narrow miss of an eighth-place finish as a Central Wisconsin Christian sophomore.
“I was so excited after seeing people stand there,” Zonnefeld said. “I couldn’t help but smile and be happy.”
