The Reedsburg/Wisconsin Dells co-op and Monona Grove boys hockey teams traded punches throughout their non-conference match-up on Dec. 1.
Ultimately it was the Cheavers who got the last laugh against the Silver Eagles, earning a 5-4 win at Reedsburg Area Community Arena. Reedsburg/Wisconsin Dells took a 3-2 lead into the third period but needed some late game heroics to pull out the victory.
After the teams traded goals in the opening 1 minute, 30 seconds of the period, Monona Grove pulled even at 4-4 with just under three minutes remaining on a goal by Sam Suski. The game seemed destined for overtime but Reedsburg/Wisconsin Dells’ Danny Ely had other ideas.
With time winding down, the sophomore forward slotted home assists from Derek Pawlak and Jonathan Zobel, past Monona Grove goalie Andrew Gilbertson with 37 seconds left to play to put the Cheavers on top for good.
Pawlak, Zobel and Thomas Pfaff led the way for Reedsburg/Wisconsin Dells as each scored and recorded multiple assists. The trio scored the three Cheavers goals in the second period, with Pfaff adding a pair of assists and Pawlak adding one helper of his own.
The Cheavers peppered Gilbertson, hounding the Silver Eagles goalie with 55 shots on goal, while RWD goalie Cooper Oakes made 22 saves in the win.

After clipping the Silver Eagles, Reedsburg/Wisconsin Dells opened Badger North Conference play with a 3-2 comeback win over Waunakee on Dec. 4.
The teams traded goals in the first period before Waunakee claimed a 2-1 lead early in the second period on a goal by Dane Luebke. It took some time for the Cheavers (1-0-0 Badger North, 3-1-1) to answer, but they eventually knotted things up at 2-2 on a power play goal from Pfaff with 12 minutes, 16 seconds played in the period.
Like against Monona Grove, the game looked destined for overtime until Pawlak had other plans. With just under two minutes remaining, the junior forward took a pass from Oakes and put it home past Waunakee goalie Hunter Beck with 15:16 played.
Oakes made 21 saves in the penalty-filled game, as Waunakee committed eight penalties and RWD had four of its own.
