The Kilbourn Fire Department will receive new breathing apparatus in the coming year after approval for the $244,074 purchase was approved by the Wisconsin Dells City Council and its finance committee Dec. 18.

The city approved the SCBA or self-contained breathing apparatus provides breathable air when firefighters enter a burning building. The equipment does not require a remote supply of air.

The equipment will be purchased from Jefferson Fire and Safety of Middleton. Funds for the purchase will come from several accounts: $175,000 from premier resort taxes; $10,000 from the department’s operating fund; $30,000 from the department’s funds, which are raised from donations and events; and $29,074 from a “fire surplus fund.”

At the close of the city council meeting Alderperson Mike Freel said that when the Department of Transportation finished work on the Kilbourn Bridge it did not replace a fence that was on the west end of the bridge. He said he thought the fence should be replaced as the one on the east side was.

Public Works Director David Holzem said DOT did not feel the fence was necessary with curb and gutter now at the west end. He said that anyone could walk around the old fence.

Landers asked that public works discuss the issue with Sauk County. That part of the bridge is in Sauk County.

The council also approved the following:

  • Transferring a squad car to the planning and zoning department for its use, purchasing a new squad car for the police department and selling by online auction the car currently used by planning and zoning. If the squad car had been sold it would bring about $4,500. Planning and Zoning Administrator Chris Tollaksen said the car he has been using will not bring $4,500. An additional 4,500 will come from PRT funds for the new police squad.
  • The expanded planning contract with MSA for rebuilding Eddy Street to include sewer, water, storm sewer and lights and to go to La Crosse Street. City Treasurer Karen Terry said the additional $55,443 will come from PRT funds.
  • A new boom truck for the electric utility at a cost of $197,304.
  • A mobile home park license for Pleasant Valley Properties for the mobile home park at 610 Commercial Avenue. The new license is contingent on the sale of the property to Pleasant Valley Properties.
  • Legacy sign declarations for Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Meals, Monks and Fudge at 108 Broadway.
  • A seasonal workforce housing permit for Deletria Nash/Nash Properties for 410 Wisconsin Ave.
  • A pole attachment contract with Verizon.
  • A revised force main sewer line route for Chula Vista.
  • Parking lot line markings and signage on River Road at the Dells Boat Company parking lot and closing of the Broadway entrance to the parking lot.
  • An ordinance changing the lot area and dimensional standards in the zoning code.
  • An ordinance rezoning part of the Chula Vista property from commercial large scale to planned unit development.
