Former Wisconsin Dells High School athlete MJ Delmore and the UW-Stevens Point men’s basketball team have advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III tournament.
The Pointers (21-8), making their first tournament appearance since winning the national title in 2014-15, defeated North Central (Ill.) 72-55 in their opener Friday on before throttling Bethany Lutheran College (Minn.) 82-44 in the second round on Saturday.
Against the Cardinals, Delmore scored four points, grabbed three rebounds and had two assists in 33 minutes. The 5-foot-11 guard notched eight points, including a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line, and had four assists in the Pointers’ 38-point win over the Vikings.
UW-Stevens Point will next meet Whitman College (Wash.) in the Sweet 16 on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at UW-Platteville. If the Pointers win, they could potentially meet the host Pioneers in the Elite 8 with a ticket to the Final Four on the line.
The teams split the regular season meetings, including UW-Platteville notching a 56-47 win in Platteville on Feb. 7.
