Wisconsin Dells used a hot-shooting night to improve its winning streak to seven games with a 81-30 victory over Nekoosa in a South Central Conference game in Wisconsin Dells on Friday night.
Leading the high-powered Chiefs to the victory was Katelyn Meister. The senior made all six of her 3-pointers and scored 28 points in the first half, on her way to scoring a game-high 35 points. As a team, Wisconsin Dells made 11 3-pointers in the game, all coming in the first half, helping them take a 60-20 lead at the break.
Wisconsin Dells coach Bob Buss said the key to the big offensive night was the team's passing.
“It doesn’t matter how you’re playing, when you’re shooting well, it looks good,” Buss said. “This was the game we had the most assists. We were shooting well, be we got girls the ball in open spots, so I thought our passing was excellent in the first half also.”
With the game tied at 5, the Chiefs went on a 22-0 run to bury the Papermakers. The run started with a free throw from senior Jamie Pfeifer, which came right before Wisconsin Dells hit three straight 3-pointers in a span of 30 seconds. The first of those long-range buckets came from senior Grace Myklebust, who knocked down a pair of 3-pointers on her way to a 14-point night. Meister followed with two 3-pointers of her own, giving the Chiefs a 15-5 lead with 13:40 to play.
Two more buckets from Myklebust, including another 3-pointer added to the lead, before senior Bethany Smith made a 3-pointer from the left wing and Meister scored on a layup to finish the run and give Wisconsin Dells a 27-5 lead.
Five different Chiefs made 3-pointers in the win. Buss said his team’s ability to knock down shots all starts with a belief that they can make them.
“It’s all about confidence. I think early in the season, some girls would hesitate before they shot,” Buss said. “Now they’re just catching and shooting, not thinking about it. The confidence piece is huge. They know they can make it. Now it just has to relay to a game.”
