The Wisconsin Dells girls basketball team moved one step closer to winning another South Central Conference championship with a 58-37 victory over Westfield on Tuesday night at Wisconsin Dells High School.

The Chiefs got a game-high 19 points from senior Katelyn Meister to go along with 12 points from senior Bethany Smith and 10 points from senior Grace Myklebust as they used a strong start to the second half to bury the Pioneers.

Westfield scored six of the final eight points of the first half, taking advantage of Meister having to go the bench with two fouls. The final of those points was a buzzer-beating layup by junior Iris Slotten that cut the Wisconsin Dells lead down to single digits at 23-14 entering the break.

Meister returned to the court to start the second half and the Chiefs took off. Wisconsin Dells opened the second half on a 13-0 run to extend its lead to 36-14. Meister scored the final seven points of the run on a pair of layup and a 3-pointer to put the Pioneers in a hole they couldn’t get out of.

Westfield finally ended the run with a 3-pointer from junior Tahya Reetz, but Meister answered with a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws to make it 41-17 with 13 minutes, 27 seconds left in the game.

Wisconsin Dells looked like it would pull away from Westfield in the early going. The Chiefs used a 9-0 run to taken 18-6 lead. Smith had five of the nine points during the spurt, including a 3-pointer from the left corner that made it 16-6 with 9:35 left in the first half.

Wisconsin Dells (15-3, 7-0 SCC) can clinch its fourth straight outright South Central Conference championship with a victory in Nekoosa (8-9, 5-2) on Friday night. The Chiefs, who have won 37 straight South Central Conference games, beat Nekoosa 81-30 at home back on Jan. 4. Wisconsin Dells will finish the regular season with home games against Wautoma on Tuesday, and Mauston on Friday, Feb. 15.
