Cunningham finished second in the 800 and 1,600 meters at the Betsy DeMerit Invite in Reedsburg on Thursday, helping the lady Chiefs finish in first place as a team.

Led by a strong performance by its distance crew, the Wisconsin Dells girls track and field team emerged victorious at the 11-team Betsy DeMerit Invitational in Reedsburg on Thursday.

The lady Chiefs won four events, and finished with 124 points, beating host Reedsburg, who finished as the runner-up, with 93.33 points.

Wisconsin Dells scored huge points in the distance events, sweeping the top three spots in the 1,600 meters. Winning the one-mile race was junior Laura Beghin with a time of 5 minutes, 38.29 seconds, and finishing not too far behind in second was junior Lindsay Cunningham in 5:40.80, while sophomore Emily Cunningham was third in 5:49.33.

In the 800 meters, Wisconsin Dells had runners finish second, third and fourth. Lindsay Cunningham was second in 2:35.14, while sophomore Megan Jones was third in 2:40.01, followed by Emily Cunningham in fourth in 2:41.36.

In the 1,600-meter relay, Wisconsin Dells freshman Hailey Anchor teamed with Emily Cunningham, Lindsay Cunningham and Jones to finish in first place in 4:24.30.

Anchor also did well in her individual events, winning the 400 meters in 1:03.71 while finishing third in the 200 meters (0:28.67) and fourth in the high jump (4 feet, 8 inches).

Wisconsin Dells senior Caelan Tourdot also flexed her muscles in the throwing events. Tourdot won the shot put with a throw of 32-03, and was second in the discus, throwing it 86-00.

Freshman Alisia Schwark impressed in the hurdle events for Wisconsin Dells. In the 100 meter hurdles, Schwark finished in 0:16.50, ending up in second place to Adams-Friendship senior Brooke Livingston, who is the defending Division 2 state champion in the event. Schwark was also second to Livingston in the 300 hurdles, finishing in 0:54.13.

Other notable finishes for the Wisconsin Dells girls in Reedsburg included Jones finishing fifth in the 400 meters (1:06.31), senior Emma Vandenlangenberg finishing fifth in the 300 hurdles (0:57.49) and junior Riley Lange finishing sixth in the shot put (28-08 ½).

The Wisconsin Dells boys finished fifth on Thursday with 72.5 points. Host Reedsburg won the boys competition with 177.5 points.

Claiming the only victory for the Wisconsin Dells boys at the meet was senior Nick Kruschke, who won the pole vault by clearing 11-00.

Sophmore Nick Sabey narrowly missed giving Wisconsin Dells a second victory, as he finished second in the 3,200 meters with a time of 11:36.39. That was just three-hundredths of a second behind Calix Wheaton of Ithaca/Weston, who the two-mile race in 11:36.36.

The Chiefs compiled some points in the throwing events. In the shot put, sophomore Preston Backhaus finished second (39-10), while senior Kevin Coughlin finished fifth (37-00), and senior Kody Funmaker was sixth (36-10). In the discus, sen Funmaker was second with a throw of 119-08, while Coughlin was sixth with a throw of 108-01.

Junior Cade Ravenscroft finished fifth or better in three different events for the Chiefs. Ravenscroft’s top finish came in the long jump, where he was third with a distance of 18-04 ¾. He was also fourth in the triple jump (37-01) and fifth in the high jump (5-06).

Junior Pablito Schulz finished third in the 1,600 meters in 5:08.81. He also joined forces with Jayce DIckman, Logan Janke and Sabey to finish third in the 3,200 relay in 9:35.05.

Next up for Wisconsin Dells will be the Baraboo Relays, which will take place on Friday in Baraboo, starting at 4 p.m.
