The South Central Cyclones Peewee B team has lost just three games this season. One of those losses was a 5-1 defeat at the hands of the host Viroqua Thunder on Dec. 3.
The Cyclones avenged that lopsided defeat, taking three of a possible four points in a doubleheader against the same Thunder at the Reedsburg Area Community Arena (RACA) on Saturday. After settling for a 3-3 draw in the first game Saturday, the Cyclones pushed a little harder in the getaway game, pulling out a 6-2 win.
In the first game, the Thunder appeared in control once again, scoring twice in the game’s first 5 minutes and carrying a 2-0 lead into the second period.
Carstyn Cook converted a feed from Nathan Gneiser to get the Cyclones on the board just past the five-minute mark of the second period and the same pair struck again just past the halfway mark of the third, this time Gneiser pulling the trigger on a pass from Cook.
Viroqua pulled in front again with 4:10 to play, but 34 seconds later, Gus DeFosse took a pass from Mark Othmer and buried it to tie the game up once again.
Neither team could net a game winner in the final minutes.
Giovani Rivas stood tall between the pipes for the Cyclones, stopping 27 shots as his team was outshot 30-16 in the contest.
The second game was was dominated by the Cyclones, as the home team took a 4-0 first period lead and added two more in the second period before Viroqua rallied for the final two goals of the contest.
Mason Hess paced the Cyclones with two goals in the game and Spencer Garbacz chipped in a goal with two assists. Kaden Uminski added a goal and assist with the other goal scored by Carson Jopp. Othmer, Gneiser and Andrew Nelson collected assists as well.
Rivas turned aside another 20 shots to pick up the win in goal.
