The South Central Cyclones Peewee B team saw its seven-game unbeaten streak snapped with a 4-3 loss to Stoughton on Saturday in Reedsburg, but avenged the defeat later the same day with a 5-1 win in the second half of a doubleheader at the Pierce Park Pavilion in Baraboo.
On Sunday, the Peewee Cyclones picked up two more wins in Reedsburg, beating the Madison Polar Caps 4-1, and then Verona 3-0.
In Saturday’s loss to Stoughton, Mark Othmer got the Cyclones on the board late in the second period off assists from Gus DeFosse and Mason Hess, but Stoughton answered quickly to take a 3-1 lead into the third period.
Peyton Sloan scored an unassisted goal early in the third period to get the Cyclones within a goal at 3-2, and Colin Mattson tied it up less than two minutes later on an assist from Nathan Gneiser. Stoughton denied the comeback though with a goal with 5:04 left to play to get the win..
Giovani Rivas turned aside 21 shots in goal for the Cyclones in the loss.
The second game against Stoughton was all Cyclones, as they cruised to a 5-1 win.
Spencer Garbacz led the charge with a pair of goals, while Othmer added a goal and an assist. Other goals came from Hess and Carstyn Cook, while Carter Renneberg added an assist. Rivas made 18 saves to pick up the win.
In Sunday’s 4-1 win over the Polar Caps, the Cyclones scored four unanswered goals in the third period after falling into a 1-0 hole.
The four goals came in a span of 5:24, with two coming from Hess. Other goals came from Renneberg and Carson Jopp. Garbacz and Hess also picked up assists and Rivas picked up another win with an 18-save effort.
In the 3-0 win over Verona, Rivas stopped all nine shots he faced for his third shutout of the season. The Cyclones got two goals from Garbacz with Peyton Sloan scoring the other. Assists went to Nolan Pope, Kaden Uminski and Othmer.
The 3-1 weekend gives the Peewee B Cyclones a 17-4-1 overall record on the season.
Squirt A team has strong weekend
The South Central Cyclones Squirt A team enjoyed one of its best weekends, skating to a 2-2 draw with Sauk Prairie in Baraboo on Saturday before picking up an 8-1 win in La Crosse on Sunday.
In Saturday’s game, Nicholas McPherson put the Cyclones in front with the lone goal of the first period and Thomas Sarnow added another in the second to double the margin. Sauk Prairie battled back to get the tie with a pair of goals from Kaleb Chetwood.
Alexander Griebe turned aside 12 shots in goal for the Cyclones and Cameron McInerney made 18 saves for the Flyers.
Squirt B team loses in La Crosse
The South Central Cyclones Squirt B team made the trip to Green Island Arena in La Crosse on Saturday and dropped a 4-2 decision.
The teams played through a scoreless opening period, but the Cyclones hit the scoreboard first as Elizabeth Haag found the back of the net for an unassisted goal 3:04 into the second period.
The La Crosse Squirts responded with a pair of goals before the end of the second period and another early in the final period to go up 3-1. Haag notched her second goal of the game, converting a pass from Briana Sullivan with 5:16 to play to get the Cyclones within a goal, but La Crosse scored an insurance goal with 3:01 to play.
Wyatt Jost made a six saves in goal for the Cyclones in the loss.
Peewee A team falls to Janesville
The South Central Peewee A Cyclones made the trip to Janesville on Saturday, and despite a quick start, ended up losing 4-3.
Nathan Stando converted a pass from Caden Brandt 4:21 into the contest to get the Cyclones on the board, but the host Bluebirds scored the next two goals to take a 2-1 lead.
Carsen Brandt’s goal from Logan DeMars with 34 seconds to go in the second period tied the game, and Brady Baldwin scored in the opening minute of third on an assist from Stando to give the Cyclones a 3-2 lead. The lead stood up until Janesville tied it with 2:27 to play, and then got the winning goal with 34 seconds to go.
Burke Schweda made 13 saves in goal for the Cyclones in the loss.
Bantam B squad wins, ties
The South Central Cyclones Bantam B team played Janesville twice on Saturday in Baraboo, picking up a 2-1win and a 4-4 tie.
In the 2-1 win, Aidan Collins and Conner Mortimer both collected goals for the Cyclones, while Andrew Schaetzl finished with 27 saves to get the win.
In the 4-4 tie, Dante Hoppe had a pair of goals, while Carter Scully and Conner Putz had the other two goals for the Cyclones. Schaetzl was strong in net, finishing with 34 saves.
